Discovering Rhumsiki and Its Legendary Seer

In March 2025, I traveled to Rhumsiki, a breathtaking region in northern Cameroon, close to the Nigeria border. My travel companions and I were deeply moved by the beauty of the landscape and the warmth of the people, even though we hadn’t announced our visit in advance.

Upon arrival, a rooster was caught and prepared for our meal, which slowly cooked over a wood fire while we explored the village. But the most fascinating moment of our tour was meeting the famous seer of Rhumsiki, commonly known as the “Crab Sorcerer.”

The Ritual of the Crab Sorcerer

This seer is renowned for his ability to communicate with a crab and interpret its movements to deliver messages to visitors. When we arrived at his compound, children were playing under the trees, and women were sorting peanuts. The seer was inside his house, and our guide sent someone to call him. We waited about ten minutes before he appeared.

He was an elderly man, dressed in a loose garment, walking slowly and almost solemnly. He greeted us kindly and sat down in front of his consultation instruments—all made from natural materials. After arranging his setup, he reached into a calabash and pulled out a large live crab. Then, in a precise ritual known only to him, he fixed a piece of wood into soil placed in a small calabash set above a larger one. Through the interpreter, he invited us to present our questions.

One by one, we asked about topics ranging from our association’s activities to international affairs. For each question, the process was as follows:

  • Careful listening with the help of the interpreter
  • Ritual placement of wooden pieces and calabash fragments
  • Verbal presentation of the question to the crab
  • Placing the crab inside the calabash
  • Waiting, then opening the calabash
  • Interpreting the crab’s movements among the wooden pieces

His interpretations revealed a deep understanding of local and global issues, with an impressive ability to analyze complex situations. Months later, I am still amazed by the accuracy and wisdom of his insights.

Money Is Not the Focus

Before visiting, we asked how much the consultation would cost. The guide’s answer was clear: the seer does not ask for money. If you are satisfied, you may throw whatever you wish on the ground as you leave. That’s what we did—and so did others who came for consultations. After us, a woman arrived seeking advice. The guide explained that many people consult him and that he is highly respected in the village.

He lives a simple life, offering listening and guidance as a service to the community. In return, villagers bring food according to their means. For him, the focus is not on transaction, but on transformation—helping people find clarity and peace.
