The Administrative System among the Bamiléké: The Symbolism of the Number 9

Administration among the Bamiléké is deeply marked by symbolism. In this article, I would like to share some insights I have learned about the significance of the number 9.

The Nine Notables

It would be inaccurate to consider the Bamiléké administrative system as a monarchy. On the surface, one might think that only one person—the chief—makes decisions. But in reality, the chief is surrounded by a council of nine notables.

In many villages, people say that these nine notables were the co-founders of the village. From generation to generation, their successors take on the same names as those who were present at the founding of the community.

They play a crucial role, particularly in the initiation of the new chief.

The Nine Weeks of La’akam

The La’akam is the place where the future chief undergoes training. In Bamiléké society, one does not choose to become a chief; one is chosen to become a chief. This nuance is extremely important, and I will devote an entire article to it.

Once chosen, the new chief spends nine weeks in a special place dedicated to his formation.
During these nine weeks, he learns the fundamental elements of the responsibility he will assume for the well-being of the community.

What the Symbolism of the Number 9 Reveals

The symbolism of the number 9 opens the door to two essential aspects of Bamiléké administration:

  • The chief’s decisions are enriched by diverse viewpoints (through the council of nine notables).
  • Leadership requires a structured initial formation, symbolized by the nine weeks of La’akam.

Consultation with wise advisers and the personal formation of the leader are contributions that Bamiléké culture offers to the shared heritage of humanity.

And you — in your culture, is there special training for leaders?
How do people in positions of authority make their decisions?
