On the Shores of the Atlantic Ocean: The Grilled Fish of Down Beach Limbe

With this blog post, I conclude the series dedicated to Mount Cameroon—from the summit all the way down to the Atlantic Coast. I wouldn’t be happy to end this journey without mentioning Limbe’s iconic gastronomic specialty: grilled fish!

Down Beach: A Mythical Place

On the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, not far from what was once the port of Limbe, lies a kind of semi‑open‑air restaurant area. This is the place to go when you want to eat grilled fish in Limbe.

The menu is a delightful blend of simplicity and flavor—a true expression of Ubuntu.

  • The fish is fresh, brought in by fishermen every morning.
  • The women are the specialists of the art of grilling.
  • They clean the fish, season it with a mixture of spices, and place it on a metal grill over charcoal.
  • As the fish cooks, they keep adding layers of seasoning until it is perfectly done.

The grilled fish is served with:

  • roasted plantains,
  • cassava,
  • or other local tubers.

A spicy pepper sauce is also prepared and offered to those who enjoy hot food. Depending on personal preference, the meal is accompanied by a drink of choice.

Over the years, Down Beach has become a must‑visit stop in Limbe. Sharing a freshly grilled fish with friends has become a symbol of the Limbe experience.
